Establish, improve, and protect accessibility standards for people with physical and mental disabilities.
How We Can Help
Many countries, regions, and cities have legislation in place to establish, improve, and protect accessibility standards for people with physical, sensory, cognitive, and mental health-related disabilities. These requirements are intended to help ensure that buildings, facilities, services, and public spaces are designed and operated in a way that is inclusive, safe, and accessible to all users. One prominent example is the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005 (AODA), which sets out accessibility requirements for public, private, and non-profit organizations in Ontario and aims to identify, remove, and prevent barriers for people with disabilities.
Accessibility regulations often address areas such as barrier-free paths of travel, entrances, washrooms, signage, ramps, elevators, door clearances, visual and audible alarms, and accessible parking. Buildings and facilities are typically required to follow established accessibility standards and design guidelines, such as the Canadian Standards Association’s CSA B651-18 – Accessible Design for the Built Environment, which provides technical requirements for creating more accessible and usable built environments.
